The Short Version

Online ordering with in-store pickup lets your customers browse your inventory, reserve their order online, and pay at your counter when they come in to grab it. When the website and the POS come from the same team, the whole thing runs on one set of numbers. Inventory, orders, and payments sync automatically. Lifelong runs this through our marketing partner Hav0k, a Lifelong Merchant Services company. The U.S. Census Bureau's Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales report shows online retail keeps growing quarter over quarter, and buy-online-pick-up-in-store is one of the biggest slices of that growth. For counter-culture retail especially (smoke, vape, kava, liquor), pickup solves the carrier-compliance headaches that come with shipping age-restricted products.

Below is what Hav0k builds, how it connects to your Lifelong register, and why in-store pickup fits specialty retail better than most other channels.

Why in-store pickup fits specialty retail

For most retailers, in-store pickup started as a pandemic convenience and stuck around because customers liked it. For counter-culture retail, it does something extra. It lets you sell online without wading into carrier shipping rules that shift under your feet.

Shipping tobacco, vape, kava, or alcohol runs through a patchwork of federal, state, and carrier-level restrictions. Federal Tobacco 21 requires age verification for every tobacco sale. State laws add their own rules. UPS, FedEx, and USPS each have their own restrictions on what they'll carry. Managing all of that alongside the sale itself is a real cost.

Pickup sidesteps most of it. The customer browses on your website, places their order online, and comes into the store to pay and collect. Your team runs the payment at the counter and hands the order over with a real ID check. No carrier compliance. No shipping insurance disputes. No "the driver left it on the porch" problem. And the customer walks out the door having seen your store, which often turns into a second purchase.

What Hav0k does

Hav0k is a marketing and e-commerce partner inside the Lifelong Merchant Services family. When you sign up for online ordering with in-store pickup on Lifelong POS, the Hav0k team builds:

  • Your online storefront with a clean product catalog that mirrors what's in your POS
  • The order-reservation flow so customers can pick items and lock in a pickup
  • The pickup notification system so the counter knows an order is ready to stage
  • The inventory sync back to your POS so a reserved unit draws down the same on-hand count

Payment happens at the counter when the customer arrives, on the same Lifelong terminals and merchant account that ring your walk-in sales. One deposit report at the end of the day.

How the sync works

Every retail transaction has three moving parts. Product info, inventory count, and payment. On a two-vendor setup (a website vendor + a separate POS vendor), each of those three lives in a different place and someone has to reconcile them. On the Hav0k plus Lifelong setup, they live in one place:

  • You add a product in Lifelong POS. It shows up on the Hav0k storefront within seconds.
  • You sell 3 units in-store. The online catalog decrements the count in real time.
  • A customer reserves 1 unit online for pickup. Your POS on-hand count drops by 1 immediately.
  • The customer pays at the counter when they come in. Both channels post to the same merchant account.

That means the last unit of a product can't get sold twice. The website goes to "out of stock" the moment the shelf goes to zero, regardless of which channel emptied it.

What we set up together

An online-ordering launch on Lifelong plus Hav0k goes live within 7 days. Here's how those days break out:

Days 1 to 2: Product catalog review. Hav0k walks through what you sell, which categories go online, and which stay in-store only.

Days 3 to 5: Storefront build. Hav0k designs the site with your brand, sets up the order-reservation flow, and connects the inventory sync to your Lifelong POS.

Day 6: Staff training on the pickup flow. Every team member who works the counter walks through: how a new order lands, how it gets staged, how the pickup handoff works, and how to verify age at pickup for restricted categories.

Day 7: Soft-launch with one or two products to catch any edge cases, then full-catalog go-live. See our retail solution overview for how this fits into a full setup.

What counter-culture retailers get out of it

Beyond the obvious "sell online without shipping headaches," a few specific wins we see:

A better product discovery layer. Customers browse your catalog on their own time and land in your store already knowing what they want. That's a shorter counter conversation and a higher-margin ticket.

Repeat orders without repeat questions. A regular can reorder their usual vape pods, cigars, or kava strain in three taps. They come in, grab the bag, and go. Time saved on both sides of the counter.

Marketing that ties back to inventory. When Hav0k sends an email about a new arrival or a weekend promo, the link goes to a live catalog. If the item sells out mid-campaign, the site says so. No accidentally-oversold moments.

Age verification stays intact. Because pickup happens at the counter, the same age-check flow you already run applies. No third-party verification service to layer on top. See Lifelong Merchant Services' high-risk merchant account guide for how the payment side stays stable in these categories.

What we don't do

To be clear about scope, Hav0k plus Lifelong is set up for order online, pick up in store. We don't run a shipping fulfillment operation for age-restricted products, and we don't handle third-party marketplace listings (Amazon, eBay, Instagram Shop, etc.). If shipping is your primary channel, we'll tell you upfront that we're not the right fit.

That said, for general (non-age-restricted) retail categories, standard shipping is available through the storefront. Most of our clients still choose pickup as the main channel because of the second-purchase pattern at the counter.

FAQ

What is online ordering with in-store pickup?

Online ordering with in-store pickup (sometimes called BOPIS, for buy online pick up in store) lets customers browse your inventory on your website, reserve their order online, and pay at the counter when they come in to pick it up. You keep the age check, the customer relationship, and the second-purchase opportunity that happens when they walk in.

How does Hav0k connect to Lifelong POS?

Hav0k is a Lifelong Merchant Services company, so the storefront and the POS share the same inventory and order records. When you add a product in the POS, it shows up on the Hav0k site within seconds. When you sell in-store, the online count updates in real time. Customers pay at the counter when they come in for pickup, so both channels settle on the same merchant account and your end-of-day report shows them together.

Does this work for age-restricted categories like vape or liquor?

Yes, and it's actually one of the strongest fits. Pickup keeps the age check at the counter with your team, which is where age verification is most defensible for the record. You skip the carrier-compliance rules that make shipping these categories complicated.

How long does setup take?

Within 7 days. Days 1 to 2 cover catalog review. Days 3 to 5 are the storefront build. Day 6 is staff training on the pickup flow. Day 7 is a soft-launch plus full-catalog go-live.

What does it cost?

Pricing depends on catalog size, but the Hav0k build is bundled into your Lifelong monthly plan rather than billed as a separate vendor. Payment happens at the counter for both walk-in and pickup customers, so your existing processing rates apply and everything settles to the same merchant account.

What happens if an item sells out mid-order?

The Hav0k system won't let a customer reserve a product that's out of stock. If two customers try to grab the last unit at the same moment (one online, one in-store), the sync prevents the double-sell and the online customer sees a message that the item is no longer available. Since payment happens at pickup, no refund is needed.

Do I need to change my POS to use Hav0k?

You need to be on Lifelong POS or migrate to it. Hav0k's inventory and order sync is built specifically for the Lifelong platform. If you're on another POS today, our team handles the migration alongside the online-ordering setup. See our retail solutions page for what that looks like.
